Video of the last half hour of yesterday’s Monte Paschi Eroica is available here (part I) and here (part II). Commentary is in Italian. Great racing and it provided some food for thought on who might be a threat at Milan – Sanremo in two week’s time. This photo and this one really give a feel for what this race is like.
There are few races that are instantly dubbed a classic, but tomorrow’s Monte Paschi Eroica has gained that monikor in a lot of people’s eyes. Just like Paris – Roubaix is famous for running over the rough cobbled roads of Northern France, Italy’s Eroica is unique for parcours that takes in the white gravel roads around Siena. What follows is an energy sapping race, with the peloton often hidden by clouds of rising dust.
Now only in its third year, last year’s edition culminated in a great duel between two of the sport’s strongmen, Fabian Cancellara and Alessandro Ballan. With Cancellara coming out on top in the end, Ballan will have another chance to add this race to his palmares tomorrow, since Cancellara is out injured due to a training crash.
Here’s hoping that by next year Eurosport or some other broadcaster will pick this race up. In the mean time, I’m hoping I’ll be able to find some video highlights on the web on Sunday.
